Over a million ethnic Kazaks currently live in China. Thousands fled east to China in order to escape Russian collectivization in the 1920's and 30's. The Chinese Communist Revolution brought renewed threats to the Kazak way of life. I was inspired to see how, despite years of political struggle and pressures to assimilate, Kazak people living in the grasslands of Northwestern China continue to find ways to keep their language and cultural traditions alive.

Door to Exile
The rear gate of Jiayuguan Fort at the end the Great Wall. Chinese exiles, soldiers, and trading caravans would pass through these gates heading westward, into the the Gobi Desert and through the territory surrounding the Taklamakan Desert. Historically, the Chinese have thought of the traditional inhabitants of this region as “barbarians”.
