Door to Exile

Door to Exile

The rear gate of Jiayuguan Fort at the end the Great Wall. Chinese exiles, soldiers, and trading caravans would pass through these gates heading westward, into the the Gobi Desert and through the territory surrounding the Taklamakan Desert. Historically, the Chinese have thought of the traditional inhabitants of this region as “barbarians”.
